The Jagannath Puri Rath Yatra is one of the grandest and the most sacred festivals in India, which draws millions of devotees from all parts of the world. Puri, Odisha, organizes this event every year in honor of Jagannath-the incarnation of Lord Vishnu, along with Balabhadra and Subhadra. Historical Importance of Rath Yatra

Rath Yatra can be traced back to ancient references to it as found in sacred Hindu scriptures. It is believed that on the day (called Pahandi) God Jagannath comes out of his temple and goes on to bless all those individuals who cannot have the opportunity of visiting the temple. It literally means that people will be able to access the very divine being without the constraints of caste, creed or social standing.

The Rituals and Processions

1. Snana Purnima

It starts with Snana Purnima, bathing the deities with 108 pitchers of water, for 15 days the idols are incubated and covered with that process known as Anasara.

2. Pahandi Bije

On the day of Rath Yatra, it would be the grand procession called Pahandi Bije for bringing Deities to three gigantic chariots, as below.

Lord Jagannath Chariot: Nandighosa (45 feet high, 16 wheels)

Lord Balabhadra Chariot: Taladhwaja (44 feet high, 14 wheels)

Goddess Subhadra Chariot: Darpadalana (43 feet high, 12 wheels)

3. Chhera Pahanra

The Gajapati King of Puri performs this master ritual of Chhera Pahanra, who is also regarded as the first devotee of Lord Jagannath, in front of sweeping the chariot decks with golden broomsticks. This symbolizes humility.

4. Pulling Chariots

Chariots are pulled through Grand Road (Bada Danda) whilst hymns and devotional songs are sung by the devotees. The journey finally ends in the Gundicha Temple, marking this day’s annual visit of the deity to his aunt.

5. Bahuda Yatra

After a period of nine long days, this returns course called Bahuda Yatra makes the deities get back to their abode, Jagannath Temple, completing the festival.
